The Social Studies Department at Cariboo Hill Secondary is a great place to learn. We are a collaborative group of professionals that pride ourselves in making Social Studies curriculum exciting, enriching and challenging to all our students. We help students develop skills such as reading comprehension, writing, and primary source analysis. In addition, we foster the use of interpersonal skills development by:

  • conducting group work,
  • utilizing technology for research and assignments
  • making use of standard and customized rubrics

As a collaborative group of professionals, it is our goal to assist our students in understanding how to ultimately achieve success.

The Social Studies Department offers a wide variety of senior courses that satisfy the myriad of interests of our students. The following academic elective courses can be taken in the grade 11 year: Psychology 11 and Law 12. Academic elective courses that can be taken in the grade 12 or with special permission from the course teacher in grade 11: History 12, Geography 12, AP Psychology 12, Law 12, Social Justice, AP Art History 12.

AWARDS

The Social Studies Department offers annual awards for exemplary achievement in social studies courses. Awards are presented at the June Cariboo Hill awards ceremony. The individual Grade 12 Elective Awards are presented during the graduation ceremonies. Students are invited to work towards any of these awards. Students should contact a Cariboo Hill Social Studies teacher for more details.

Oath of Cariboo Hill Award
This award would be given to a grade 8 to 12 student who exhibits exemplary behaviours and activities in the realm of social responsibility and citizenship.

Overall Social Studies 11 Award
This award would be given to a grade 11 student who exhibits top academic behaviours as well as who has contributed in many ways to discussion and general calibre of the class.

Overall Social Studies Elective Award
This award would be given to one student who, in no fewer than two SS elective courses, achieved top academic status and contributed in many ways to discussion and general calibre of the class.

Begbie Contest Award
Begbie History Contest top Cariboo Hill student. This award would be given to one student who scored the top mark in the school on the National History Contest in April.

Individual Grade 12 Elective
These awards are presented to the top student for academic achievement and contribution to discussion and general calibre of the class in each grade 12 elective.
